Chinese AI company DeepSeek's services went down for nearly five hours on Thursday, 15 October, affecting users worldwide, according to the South China Morning Post.
The outage hit the DeepSeek chatbot and its developer API for the V4 Pro and V4.1 Flash models. It started in the morning, and service came back after about four hours and 50 minutes, around 1 PM China time. Some users posted error messages such as 'server temporarily unavailable' on social media.
The company apologised and posted a notice on its developer platform saying it will refund everything users spent between 8 and 14 October, as credits.
The source's headline calls it 'another' major outage for the company, meaning this isn't the first time its services have gone down.
The lesson applies to any tool: cloud services can fail suddenly, however popular they are, and anyone building work or products on them should plan for that.
