CERN and Mistral plan the first AI foundation model for collider physics

CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics, and French AI company Mistral signed a statement of intent for a long-term partnership to develop AI foundation models for scientific discovery, according to CERN's official site.

At its heart is the plan to build a single pretrained Large Physics Model, which CERN says will be the first foundation model for collider physics. It will be trained on billions of simulated proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world's largest and most powerful particle accelerator.

The one model is designed to support many tasks: reconstructing collisions, identifying particles, flagging unexpected signals and evaluating future detector designs. Today that work relies on a chain of specialised algorithms, each built for one task.

CERN holds around one exabyte, or one million terabytes, of LHC data. The number of collisions is set to rise tenfold with the upgraded HL-LHC, expected to start operating around 2030.

The initial focus is high-energy physics, but both sides say the partnership could serve the wider scientific community. CERN CIO Enrica Porcari said high-energy physics offers a unique environment to develop and test AI with exceptional rigour, with the aim of capabilities that serve and are shared with the whole physics community.
