Researchers posted a paper on arXiv saying a team of four AI agents running on Google's Gemini 4 Argon beat Minecraft, defeating the Ender Dragon, with no human intervention.

The agents started in a randomly generated world on Easy difficulty, each controlling a player through an open-source library called Mineflayer. Instead of watching a screen and pressing keys, they wrote short JavaScript programs and read the results. No one assigned them roles or gave them a plan.

Over 27 hours and 14 minutes they wrote 2,783 programs, exchanged 229 in-game chat messages and died 605 times. They split the work themselves: one gathered food, one mined for diamonds, one made tools and one prepared the Nether portal. They recorded lessons in a shared memory so mistakes weren't repeated.

A fifth agent acted as an observer to check for cheating and found none. The estimated cost was about $520 at Gemini 4 Argon's introductory price.

The researchers note the limits: Easy difficulty, a single run, and a library that gives agents information a normal player can't see. The real aim was to test long, coordinated work of the kind large software projects need.
