The World Economic Forum said AI could unlock more than $1 trillion in economic and sustainability value across the Middle East and North Africa by 2030, according to two new reports it published on 14 October at a meeting in Dubai.
The first report, developed with Bain & Company, breaks the figure into five areas: up to $200 billion in sustainable financing through the financial sector, $370 billion in sustainable investment enabled by the public sector, $250 billion in long-term asset losses avoided, $90 billion in higher valuations for the energy sector through better sustainability performance, and $100 billion in sustainable projects through cross-sector partnerships. In other words, it isn't AI-company revenue but potential value across the economy and sustainability.
The report points to a clear gap: 89% of sustainability leaders surveyed see high or very high potential for AI to advance their goals, but only 40-55% describe their adoption as piloting or scaled, depending on the use case.
The second report, developed with Saudi Research and Media Group (SRMG), says the region can connect new data centres to the grid within two to five years, compared with more than 10 years in mature markets, a potential competitive edge. The challenge is managing the rising energy, water and cooling demand as it scales.
What it means for you
The region has a big opportunity, and the challenge is actually putting AI to work. If you work in energy, water or sustainability, AI will play a bigger part in your field in the coming years.
